Look Up
L'optimisme réside dans la surprise d'une seule fenêtre ouverte (Vieux-Montréal)
Available in fine-art print, canvas, aluminum, acrylic or wood.
Also available in a perfect square in print or other formats.
It was a rainy day -- misty rain, the kind that bathes your cheeks in the promise of spring. The uneven cobblestone streets were spotted with slushy puddles of melting snow. Everything around was colored in a palette of grays and browns. With the spritzing sky and the messy sidewalks, it was easy to walk with your eyes on your feet. But, lucky to have lifted my gaze, something made me reach for my camera, which had been stowed safely away in my dry purse. Tucked around the corner was an industrial building, perfect in its symmetric geometricity. And, among the lines and columns and reflections, there was but one open window, breaking the pattern, but making you wonder. A simple reward for having looked up. To celebrate Veni Etiam Photography's first birthday in January, I had launched a contest on social media channels for a chance to win a fine-art print of the photograph of your choice! I had asked each participant to leave me a short note about which photograph from the collection they found most inspiring, and why. All participants who posted or sent in their comments were entered into a draw and ta-daaaa, the winner is announced below! London Rain"I love "London Rain" because it makes you look closer to see where you are and what's happening. It's sombre and dignified, and reminds me of how much I love watching the rain fall while being curled up and cozy inside somewhere warm, which is something I should do more often!" - M.W. London Rain is a favorite of mine, too - a shot that made me smile as soon as I snapped it, as it amused me to have captured what is "quintessentially London" in a simple scene - the Thames, the Big Ben and thousands of drops of unrelenting rain. If London Rain fondly reminds you of your time in London, makes you long to travel there for the first time one day, or simply appeals to you for other reasons, you can find it in my shop in all formats (print, canvas, aluminum, acrylic and wood) and various sizes. If you want something custom-made just for you, I'm an e-mail away! Thank you to all of you who participated in the contest! I love hearing from you and finding out which images inspire you, make you dream of travel or make you nostalgic of places you know and love. Leave a comment anytime! MISSED THE CONTEST? Even before having created Veni Etiam Photography, snapping pictures was a part of my everyday routine. Whether my scientific work or vacation drew me to faraway places, or whether the mood simply called for a walk around the block, the habit of clutching my camera and lifting my eyes up for inspiration was deeply ingrained. This very habit is what has resulted in more photographs than I can even store on a single device, and a whole lot of moments and feelings frozen in time. Portraying this vast collection, and the idea that inspiration is indeed everywhere - near or far, in the spectacular or the ridiculously ordinary - is an aspect of Veni Etiam that has been absolutely crucial to me from the start. By continuously adding to the large collection, I hope that there will always be something for everyone - an image that tugs on you more than the others, a small piece of the world in your space. To keep you up to date with what is new in shop, I've launched this blog series, as well as a Pinterest board called (perhaps somewhat unoriginally) "NEW!". Allow me to introduce you to these newcomers to the collection: Vieux-Port A reminder of times past – old warehouses of Rue de la Commune (Old Montreal) Find it in print, canvas, aluminum, acrylic or wood. Crossing the Tracks An old-fashioned glimpse of Old Montreal with the Bonsecours Market and Jacques-Cartier bridge in the distance Find it in print, canvas, aluminum, acrylic or wood. Truly the best part of my work is the joy I feel when I stop and realize that I am sharing my photographs with others worldwide. It is so much fun for me to witness reactions in person at artisan shows or when hand-delivering an item that was ordered in my online shop. There are so many photographs in my ever-growing collection, and I love the surprise and curiosity I feel when I find out which one has caught someone's attention and has made them say, "Yes!". I find it especially interesting when one or two photographs consistently end up being "favorited", "pinned" and purchased. It makes me pause to think about what it is that draws people to those images - is it the color, composition, mood or the place? Is it just that it is versatile for any space? I love to speculate about what makes people relate most to certain images over others...and of course I love getting your feedback directly! Based on this joyous part of my work, I have decided to start a new blog series called "Your favorites" where, every few months, I'll share with you which photographs have been the most popular in the collection.
