Joannie et Lysa: Two styles and one underlying passion give rise to a beautiful watercolor collection

It's no secret that art brings people together. But when two individual artists, with different styles, techniques and paths, feel a special connection that leads them to create something entirely new and unexpected, that may be even more magical.

That immediate connection was how Montreal artists Joannie Houle and Lysa Jordan describe the beginnings of their artistic collaboration.

Deeply inspired by both artists, I felt intrigued by their collaboration on a new collection of watercolor paintings, and wanted to learn more about their inspirations and artistic process.

Brought together by Instagram

Although the two artists live very close to one another, it was Instagram that brought them together.

"I followed Joannie on Instagram for a while and fell in love with one of her illustrations. I contacted her to buy the original," Lysa says, describing how she was impressed by the quality of the illustrations and Joannie's colorful and fanciful style. "Shortly after that, I was in Joannie's beautiful space with her illustration in hand. It was an immediate connection between the two of us, and we have been in contact ever since!"

Joannie also discovered Lysa's work on Instagram and was drawn to the color and luminescence of her pieces. "When Lysa contacted me to purchase one of my illustrations, I was so flattered that such a talented artist appreciates my work! We exchanged a lot during our first meeting. Without even knowing it, a very special project was born, in addition to a beautiful friendship!"
Picture
Different styles converge on a common passion

Passionate about watercolor and nature, the two artists found a way to merge their very different styles and to initiate an inspiring new collection, set to launch on May 24th, 2018 at West Elm Montreal.

"
This new collection represents this passion that we share for color and botany. It is the union of two artistic visions and the birth of a unique new style that represents us both," hence the name of the collection Joannie & Lysa. "We want to add a little beauty to people's daily lives. This collaboration is gentle and light. Our compositions are soothing and we believe that it is a feeling that people seek to add to their lives."

Artistic collaborations can be a fascinating journey for individual artists, as they not only involve blending styles and techniques, but also personalities, feelings and life experiences.

Joannie and Lysa let us in on that experience.

"It's really interesting to see how our methods, techniques and how we paint is different," says Lysa, explaining how working together was fascinating. "To give you an example, Joannie works sitting at her desk, often with a picture for inspiration and music and on my side I work on the floor, without images and without music!"

"We explored, made many tests and made several mistakes. These often brought us new ideas, which were more conclusive. When the result was satisfactory, it was really nice to share this wonder together."
Picture
When asked about the logistics of how they worked on their collection, Lysa explained: "We established a rough schedule at the outset and outlined our collaboration. We agreed on a lot of points so it was pretty fast. We worked together one day each week, often at Joannie's place, who welcomed me into her art studio like a queen every time."

An enriching collaboration

Collaborations can often give rise to surprises. But thankfully, for Joannie and Lysa, these surprises were only positive and rewarding. "We had a great time creating a unique collaboration, a mix of our two worlds. It is wonderful to witness our individual artistic touches in the same piece. We have been very surprised to see the balance of our pieces and how the mix of our two styles has created a new style all of its own."

The two painters share how their collaboration enriched their lives in ways that transcended beyond the pieces they worked on.

"It was not only a pleasure to work together, but also to share our lives as entrepreneurial artists. We talked about accounting, document management, photos, graphic design, our websites and also the challenges of our business. We also talked about what inspires us, about artists we love and admire, and about our favorite materials."
Picture
Community over competition

Their collaboration as watercolor painters in Montreal is a refreshing reminder that community is (and should always be) stronger than competition. "We both believe in the importance of mutual help, kindness and respect. Visual art is a difficult field, which comes with its ups and downs. We think competition is unnecessary. It's important to find your own way, to chart your own path and to define your own artistic approach."

Joannie and Lysa are inspiring in how they have found their own artistic approach, as individuals and as collaborators on their beautiful new collection. Their advice to other artists is to patiently explore what they wish to explore, until a personal style emerges. "Don't put effort into trying to invent a style; if you do, you will create a series of inauthentic works. It's best to work on something you want to explore and see what comes out of it. You will begin to see your own personal style after working on numerous pieces," Lysa says, although she admits that it does not come easily.

"Nobody knows for you. You must find your own way."

Don't miss the launch party

When I probed Joannie and Lysa a little more on the collection and their favorite piece within it, they were reluctant to answer, keeping us in suspense a little while longer. We will have to attend their launch at West Elm Montreal on Thursday, May 24th from 5-9pm, where they will finally reveal the fruit of their labor and more anecdotes about their beautiful collaboration. Don't miss it!

It was high time I added a Quebec City collection to my Montreal & Toronto series. You had asked me time and again, but I was waiting for some down time in my schedule to go take my camera on a road trip. It was a wonderful weekend, and I ended up with many more photographs than I expected! (Although, let's be honest: isn't that always the case with me?!)

It is with excitement that I introduce the QCity collection to you! You'll find that the "usual suspects" have inspired me: architecture, urban details, textures, colors, geometric patterns and moody hues.

The collection is currently available in exclusivity to my VIP members who can order their favorite(s) via e-mail with a special pre-launch coupon they got. (Not a VIP? Remedy that here and now). Prints and coasters will be launched at the Etsy Ville de Québec spring show on May 26-27 in Québec City.

Musings in Québec City

Picture
Do you ever look at your calendar and pick a weekend in the not-too-distant future and decide that THAT weekend will be dedicated to unwinding?

When I realized that I had "accidentally" booked myself solid for 6 weekend shows in a row, I stared at my calendar and blocked off my one remaining free weekend to do what I had felt like doing for quite some time: traveling to Quebec City, taking photos without any pressure, walking, swimming in a heated hotel pool, disconnecting from e-mail and social media, eating, drinking, laughing and feeling happy. Zero guilt, 100% leisure (well, except for the photo-editing that was to follow).
Picture
My wish-list for that weekend was simple: I wanted a room with a view, sunshine, I hoped to take 5 winning photographs, to enjoy an ice cream outdoors, to walk a lot without feeling pain, to swim in the late afternoon and in the early morning, to try a really tasty local beer, to discover a part of town I hadn't seen yet, to watch TV in the hotel room's super comfy king size bed and sleep in a little.
It was a special weekend because I got to do all of that, and I ended up with quite a few photographs! I firmly believe that when we feel relaxed and centered, creativity and passion flow more easily. You observe more, feel more, do more - without even realizing it.

To those of you who had hoped I would have some Quebec City prints and coasters, your wish is my command! Some of these have been printed and tested, and will form my new "QCity" collection! I will have the collection with me at my upcoming Etsy Ville de Québec spring show (May 26-27).
But, you know the drill: my VIPs get first pick before the collection is available online! So, check your inbox for a coupon (or sign up now).
Want to see which images made it into the QCity collection? Have a look!

Since my feelings get "trapped" into all the photos I take, I'm quite fond of my QCity collection because it was a carefree weekend, with loads of sun and laughter. Proof that you don't have to go far to feel like you're on holiday.

Mothers' Day is just around the corner and, although most Moms will tell you they don't need any gifts, they surely appreciate being spoiled with pretty things that will inspire them year-round.

Mothers' Day is especially touching to me for all those women who are not (yet) moms, but wish it wholeheartedly. Let's take a moment to think of them and send them love.

Having heard from MANY of you in person or through your written requests, I know which items often get chosen as gifts for Mom. I also know which items my own Mom adores!

Unhurried pace

4/5/2018

Picture
I've felt a little off-kilter lately. I worked a lot almost immediately after my surgery, partly because I didn't want the surgery to play a huge role in my year (unlike in 2016) and partly because everything felt urgent to me.

Still, despite my sense of urgency, I managed to miss two deadlines (which I've since tried to convince myself was okay, because I'm one person and can't do it all!). My mind has been racing, my chest has had a little flutter in it on most days, and hours off have not really helped to re-align and re-center. It's like that feeling where something is bothering you but you can't really pinpoint WHAT exactly it is.

Does that ever happen to you?

I have to consciously remind myself to stop racing against time, because spring is a beautiful example of how everything will get done, cleaned, sorted and will flourish in time, at its own unhurried pace.

Travel trinkets

I don't remember when exactly I started to collect little "trinkets" during my travels.

It probably started during my mid-teens when my parents encouraged me to remodel my bedroom in a way that suited and reflected me. I remember that feeling when I first stared to find things that inspired me - it was always a feeling of butterflies and fate and excitement to hold my newfound treasure and haul it home in my suitcase.

What is it about objects that make us giddy?

Whether I find something from my personal collection at home or away, the feeling is still the same. That burgeoning excitement of having found something that represents where I've been, what I love, and what I long to become.

To the small shop I'll probably not be able to find again in a tucked away Venetian courtyard, thank you for this artwork that I cherish every single day.

Mid-week wisdom

#MidWeekWisdom (based on a true story):

🖤When you feel like you're not making a difference or an impact, chances are, you're wrong. It takes one person to tell you that you inspire them to feel motivated again.

🖤 Sometimes showing up is the hardest part, and then it's done.

🖤 Once you do something daunting, it's always comforting to tell yourself, "Now, I can't say that I've never done that before. Next time I'll do even better!"

🖤 If you catch yourself eating too fast, holding your breath, slouching in your posture and over-working, it's really time to take a step back and make a change.

🖤 Being outside of your comfort zone is like being out in the rain. It's necessary, inevitable, unpleasant at times, and it feels so darn good when you come back in.

🖤 Mindset is key to so many things: health, success, peace. It's a wonder this isn't a skill we're encouraged to master earlier on.

🖤 Comparison really IS the thief of joy. It's so important to actively tone that habit down for our sanity's sake.

Got one to share too? Please do!

If you've followed me for a while, you know I always have something up my sleeve. Nothing mischievous, just always something NEW!

Last time, it was the Havana collection and updates to the Canadian collection.

The time before, an exciting design collaboration with Ann and Lena from Lamou Design.

The time before that, new product lines such as high quality birch wood coasters, notebooks and pouches.

All of this within a year's span!

Well, why not? Art should be versatile and functional, suited to your own daily life, moods and decor.

Here's a sneak peek at what I have up my sleeve this spring. I'll give you a hint: it's a new collaboration with Lamou design!

It's a bit nutty, come to think of it, to have such a full work-week with art and science, and yet to pack the weekends with events and more events!

[Insert my Mom's concerned voice here: "When will you rest? Do you ever have time to just do NOTHING? When will you plant your flowers?"]

But (between you and me) it's my FAVE part of the job, because I can connect with you, see your reactions in person, tell you all about what inspires me, and hear about your own travels, bucket lists and decor goals. It's honestly so special to meet with you in person!

So here is where you can find me this May and June, not only in Montreal this time but also in Ottawa and Quebec City! (And of course, I'll be scurrying to add Ottawa and Quebec City photographs to my collection before then... cue the concerned Mom again!)

I'll also have loads of new prints, frames, notebooks, coasters and a brand new home-decor product with me. Stop by to see what it is!
